Love is in the air at McQuoin Park Retirement Village
McQuoin Park Retirement Village residents celebrated Valentine’s Day with an evening full of music, dancing and fun!
In life, we all strive to have a tight-knit group of friends. The type of friends we can count on to join us in the good times and equally during the bad times.
St Mary’s Retirement Village, Berkeley residents Barbara and Margaret, who are both in their 90s, have found this type of friendship with one other. It is the type of friendship we would all be lucky to have! Barbara says, "For a very long time, I had been praying for a girlfriend, someone that I could share things with".
Barbara and Margaret, both originally from Scotland, met through mutual friends in Australia at a Scottish club. Margaret and husband Archie (who has since sadly passed away) had been residents at St Mary’s Village for several years, and when Barbara’s husband sadly passed away, she was so eager to join them, that she spent nine years on the waiting list to become a resident. Both women continue to live independently in their own units.
Although Barbara and Margaret have been friends for nearly 30 years, since Archie passed away in 2017, the two women have become inseparable. Village Manager, Jean Leaf refers to the women as the “Village socialites” and is blown away by how active their lives are. From weekends spent in Canberra, to holidays in Cairns and Perth and beyond, keeping active is a passion shared by the pair, with Margaret stating, “Life is for living, so make it count!”
The friends are off on their biggest holiday yet in September… returning for a visit to their native Scotland. Barbara and Margaret are excited to be visiting their villages back home and catching up with old friends and family members. They are also excitedly planning their itinerary for their stop-over to Singapore. Village Manager, Jean looks forward to seeing amazing photos during their travels as tech-savvy, Barbara always keeps Jean updated on Facebook Messenger and calls in for a FaceTime chat.
We wish Barbara and Margaret all the best on their holiday to Scotland and can’t wait to see some photos from their travels.
What an amazing friendship!

The Brighton is a wonderful, caring retirement community located in the vibrant suburb of Croydon. We shared some of the charitable activities the Craft Group has been involved with late last year, including the Wrap with Love initiative.
