Welcome Karen Borg to Catholic Healthcare
This week we welcome Karen Borg as the new Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Healthcare.
At Catholic Healthcare we are shining a 'light' on our people and the exceptional work they are all doing across our services. We share how our teams are innovating, engaging and helping to support the needs of our residents, clients and patients.
This week, meet Karina Gabiola, Aged Care Funding Instrument Coordinator at Villa Maria Fortitude Valley in Brisbane.
Karina’s Filipino upbringing instilled in her a strong regard and consideration for other people’s feelings, and also a strong sense of respect for the elderly which she has carried through into her current role as Aged Care Funding Instrument Coordinator.
“My parents always taught me to be respectful to everyone, to think before I speak, to listen with impartiality and to respond with a calm tone,” says Karina.
“Talking back to our elders and calling them by their first names was a big ‘no-no’ in my culture and upbringing. But my upbringing meant I had a particularly close bond with my grandparents.
“Being the first grandchild and working in Aged Care is my way of giving back to all grandparents, since mine have both passed. I also see it as a privilege to work in a sector which looks after the people who worked so hard for the luxuries that we as a society have today.”
This bond also resonates with Karina in her role and her innate empathy for the elderly.
“I see to it that my residents’ care plans are up to date and reflective of their wants and needs, to help them live their best lives in their remaining days.”
Retaining this love of her culture, it comes as no surprise that Karina’s favourite place to travel to is the Philippines, where she can eat her favourite Filipino food and sip cocktails while basking in the warmth of the waters on the beach!
“I usually go back to the Philippines for a holiday at least once a year and enjoy seeing my family”.
Hopefully Karina can get travelling again soon.
