At Catholic Healthcare we are shining a 'light' on our people and the exceptional work they are doing across our services. We share how our teams are innovating, engaging and helping to make Catholic Healthcare a great place to work.
Meet Michele Smith, Health Services Manager based at Lourdes Hospital.
Michele manages the leadership of teams at both Lourdes Hospital (Dubbo) and also at St Vincent’s Outreach Services (Bathurst). Michele is responsible for implementing and reviewing policy and procedures in day-to-day practice, identifying opportunities for new services and maintaining the general provision of high quality and safe healthcare, supported by an enthusiastic and professional workforce.
Michele has a nursing background which started in the operating theatre before she made a career change, ten years ago, which saw her doing remote nursing work in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory. This led her to management, where she managed a small regional acute hospital in the Northern Territory for seven years. Her understanding of managing an acute hospital and the complexities in delivering care in a remote setting will allow her to bring a high level of expertise into her new role.
A Catholic Healthcare value which resonates with Michele is Respect.
“I believe that respect is a key ingredient for a healthcare work environment. Respect promotes teamwork and increases productivity and efficiencies in the workplace,” says Michele.
“When I demonstrate respect, it lets my fellow staff know that they are valued for their abilities and achievements and that their role is important."
Michele is also passionate about work/life balance.
“For our patients and families, if we have staff that are afforded a good work/life balance, this in turn helps them reduce stress and burnout - which is one of the most common health issues we see in this industry.”
Michele leads a very balanced life outside of work and in her spare time she enjoys cross-stitching baby blankets. She also loves baking and travel.
